Lughnasa

29th Jul 2019

Lughnasa is celebrated around August 1 each year. One of the Irish / Celtic traditional holidays, it is most associated with Harvest, Plenty, Celebration, Fruition, and Community.

With any of the seasonal holidays, I always like to look around my own backyard, and see what are the natural signs of the season, happening around me. I live in northern Arizona, and the biggest thing going on right now is the Monsoon season. Monsoons in Arizona usually mean clear skies in the morning, then clouds building into the afternoon. Then, if a cloud opens up where you are, then you’ll get absolutely DRENCHED with rain, even if there’s not a drop falling just across the street. A good reminder of things being in transition.

Another sign of the season of Lughnasa here are acorns. Acorns everywhere! We have many types of oak trees – some tall and statuesque, and some short and shrubby with holly-like leaves. And all the acorns are getting ripe, filling out their cute acorn caps, and eventually will start to turn brown and ripen, to become the seeds of future trees.

What natural signs of the season do you see in your area?
