I love all of the new designs in the The Sacred Grove collection, and the Birch pendant is probably my favorite. And it's fitting that we discuss the Birch pendant first, because Birch trees are often the very first tree to grow in areas that have been recently cleared.

On the front of the pendant, the spiraling design is inspired directly by La Tène artwork - in this case, a 2000-year-old shield mount found in St. Mawgan-in-Pydar, in modern day Cornwall. 

The swirling form reminds me of modern fluid dynamics, and is evocative of the way water droplets travel over the surface of a leaf after a refreshing rain.

The leaf shape (modeled after the Downy Birch (Betula pubescens) native to Ireland) was chosen because there are trees with this kind of leaf shape that grow in so many different habitats and places. Aspen, Cottonwood, Broad-leaf Ash, Poplar, Basswood, Birch -- one or many of these may grow in your *own* neighborhood!

On the back of the pendant, the inscription reads "the energy of the universe flows in me". Many customers tell us Deva Designs jewelry is particularly meaningful to them because they identify with the messages our pieces carry.
